ROYAL VISIT: Prince Charles and Camilla were cheered as they arrived in Donegal Town today.
Children from Glebe National School joined in the cheers as the royal couple went on a walkabout through the Diamond.
Telly presenter Noel Cunningham gave the couple a brief history of the connections between the Annals of the Four Masters and the area.
Ernan and Diarmaid McGettigan were delighted when Charles and Camilla sampled some of their award-winning sausages.
“The south of Ireland has had all the benefits of tourism and aritsan foods over the years and we’re finally getting our say,” said Ernan.
“They were a lovely couple, very down to earth and just like us.”
The brothers invented a new sausage for the occasion.
“It’s the Buckingham Black Banger,” said Ernan, “and it’s very nice indeed.”
Charles got tucked into a European-winning sausage while Camilla had a lamb version.
“We’ve found it hard to keep our mouths shut for the past six weeks,” said Diarmaid.
“We still can’t believe they called in to see us but it is all about promoting Donegal for its food and its tourism.”
The royal couple head earlier visited Donegal Castle and later went to the Magee Tweed factory in the town.
There was an enthusiastic welcome throughout the visit.
Two women who protested against the visit were kept well away from Charles and Camilla.
Afterwards Noel Cunningham said: “It was a brilliant day for the county. I know some people aren’t happy and they are entitled to their opinion but I believe this visit was important for a whole lot of reasons; for the peace process, for reconciliation and for the future – for Donegal and for tourism in the county.”
