A Letterkenny man is to cycle across America and then Ireland in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.
Roger Holmes will take on the mammoth 3,750 mile cycle this summer.
Starting in mid-June 2016 he is cycling solo and unsupported from San Francisco to New York and from his home town of Letterkenny to Dublin – finishing at the offices of the Irish Cancer Society.
The total distance will be approximately 3,750 miles. I hope to complete the challenge in 60 days.
Should you wish to validate the authenticity of this challenge, you can do so by contacting Ena Barrett of the Irish Cancer Society, who has been helping Roger to plan the event.
Roger explained his motivation for the challenge.
“In August 2014 I had a fall from an electric bicycle, and hit my face off the road. I wasnt wearing a helmet. I suffered cuts, concussion and nerve damage due to a hand injury. I also experienced many symptoms relating to the trauma, and thought for a long time that I would not cycle again.
“Thanks to the help of some key people, one of whom is a cancer survivor, I am now back on the bike. I have taken on this challenge as a means of turning my negative experience into a positive, by raising much needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society. I am hoping, with your help, to raise at least €5,000,” said Roger.
You can track his progress on social media (look for #TransAtlanticCycle) and also on my blog: The Paris Method.
He will also be writing a journal and making YouTube video logs (vlogs) which will provide updates of the challenges faced and my progress.

“I will also use these platforms to outline how The Irish Cancer Society makes a very real difference in the lives of so many people.
