PSNI and garda detectives met last night ahead of the visit to the county today by Britain’s Prince Charles and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall.
A number of searches have taken place over the past three days linked to dissident terrorist activity.
It’s understood there are plans to attempt to disrupt the visit of the royal couple while they are here.
They are due to visit Donegal Town, Letterkenny and Glenveagh National Park.
Tourism chiefs believe it will help bring more visitors to Donegal from Britain.
However there are also fears that any disruption to the visit will have a damaging affect on the county.
It’s understood gardaí will facilitate any attempt to have a peaceful protest, but this will be well outside the security cordons planned for all three destinations today.
Garda bosses are most concerned however at plans by leading dissidents from Derry to travel to Letterkenny today.
Armed garda and PSNI units have been monitoring the movements of dissidents on both sides of the border over the past few days.
