Gardaí in Donegal are to crush a number of vehicles which they impounded for having no insurance.

Gardaí in Burnfoot seized the cars after impounding them form their owners after being stopped for not having insurance.

But the owners have refused to reclaim the cars and Gardai have been left with no other option but to send the cars to the crusher.

Among the vehicles is a Toyota Celica, Ford Focus and a Ford Fiesta.

The official An Garda Síochána Twitter page posted the pictures of the cars that are all set to be crushed in Burnfoot.

However, the tweet has sparked an angry response from a number of users on Twitter who feel the cars should be put up for sale as oppose to crushing them.

Jessica Murphy tweeted, “Most stupid thing I’ve ever seen. Why are they being crushed? Who pays for the private storage bill!?”

Balazs Szekely tweeted, “Idiots! Why u not selling them? More money for the budget! Idiot US style! If not legal, crush them! Sell them for parts!

Barry Laverty tweeted, “For these cars to be auctioned off and make money would take common sense, something Garda Traffic don’t have.”
