FEATURES: Friday last, May 6th, saw Letterkenny Youthreach take a further step in their primary school playground playset initiative when they set up stall in the Bank of Ireland, Letterkenny for a ‘Community Smiles’ day.
The day which consisted of offering tea, coffee, juice, scones, pastry and chocolate ‘goodies’ to customers making donations to the centre’s playset fundraising.
A grand total of €880 was collected, and the centre would also like to thank contributors Kernan’s Diner, Newtowncunningham, Gortlee Tool Hire, Letterkenny, Mc Cool Sawmills, Ballybofey, LYIT, Letterkenny, Charles Kelly Ltd., Letterkenny and, of course, management and staff at Bank of Ireland, Main St., Letterkenny.
Acting Co-Ordinator of Letterkenny Youthreach, Gillian Kennedy, stated that the response was ‘enormous’. “As part of our on-going 25 year celebrations we have been doing a variety of events and projects engaging with the wider community in a way to help raise awareness of all the wonderful things our Youthreach programme has to offer.
“This competition came about because we decided to reach out to the multiple primary schools in our catchment area. We were surprised by the sheer volume of entries and even more taken aback by the standard of the writing and the imagination in the art work for some of the drawings.
“Our learners are very much looking forward to working on producing the winning playset and it’s a bonus that all this hard work can be recorded as part of our learners’ assessment.”
The competition winner was Rioghnach Mc Fadden of Scoil Colmcille, Newtowncunningham, and the building tutor at Letterkenny Youthreach, Andy Dowds, with the help of the learners, hope to have the playset built and installed by middle of June.
