SPORT: A Donegal Strength and Conditioning coach has visited the Sports Science department at newly crowned Premier League champions Leicester City.
Delcan Mulhern, from Buncrana got to see first hand the techniques used by the Sport Science department in relation to the way they prepare the players.
The affable Mulhern was part of a group of coaches from the renowned Maiden City Academy that spent a number of days at the club.
Mulhern travelled over with Paul Kee, John Cunningham and Craig Lynch, they were attending a LMA (League Managers Association) meeting in Leicester.
However, the former Institute manager used his contacts to arrange a consultation between Paul Balsom, the Head of Sports Science at Leicester City and Mulhern.
Balsom, is also Head of Sports Science of the Sweden National squad who the Republic of Ireland play in the Euros.
Declan told Donegal Daily, “On my visit I got an insight into the science of the training methods, workloads, recovery techniques, medical department roles and fatigue management at Leicester City, who also had the lowest rate of injuries in the Premier League this season.
“I got to understand what Leicester City have done this season and indeed what they haven’t done to achieve such levels of freshness each week which played a huge part in their success.
“I also got an insight into the preparations of the Swedish squad for the Euros and an insight into how the Professional Soccer players at Leicester City such as Jamie Vardy, Mahrez, Kante, etc are monitored on and off the field to achieve a high level of performance.
“It was fascinating to hear how the entire training protocol will change at the club next season with their participation in the Champions League.”
Mulhern is a strength and conditioning coach at Maiden City Soccer Academy and works under the renowned Kyle Wallace.
The Academy has produced players such as Eunan O‘Kane of Bournemouth, Darron Gibson of Everton and Shane Ferguson of Millwall.
Now that Mulhern knows the recipe for success, he could yet be snapped by either Ollie Horgan or Rory Gallagher.
