FOOTBALL: Finn Harps suffered a heavy 7-0 home defeat tonight at the hands of a rampant Dundalk side, who showed just why they’re going for a hat-trick of League titles.
Dundalk were utterly ruthless and produced a quite magnificent performance that quite simply was on a different level.
The effects of Harps pulsating North-West derby draw with Derry also played a factor, and it was evident in their slow start.
Former UCD striker Robbie Benson punished Harps after five minutes, an when he added a second after twenty minutes, the Harps players and supporters knew they were in for a long, long night.
Daryl Horgan showed why he’s the best player in the league with a stunning third, and just a minute before half-time, Ciaran Coll turned into his own net.
Harps headed for the tunnel 4-0 down, and at that stage it was a damage limitation exercise.
However, Stephen Kenny’s men were in no mood to let up on Harps, and added further goals through David McMillan, Andrew Boyle and Paddy Barrett.
Harps were superb on Tuesday night, and there’s no doubt that had its effects physically on the players.
They look tired, and that coupled with a brilliant Dundalk side was a recipe for disaster.
The games are coming thick and fast and they head to Richmond Park to face St Pat’s on Tuesday evening.
Harps have a big squad, but they’ve regularly stuck with more or less the same personnel so far this season, perhaps it’s time to freshen things up in the next two games against St Pat’s and Crumlin in the FAI Cup.
