A superb display from Donegal Senior Ladies ensured a famous, famous win over Westmeath this afternoon at Parnell Park, as Donegal secured promotion to Division One.
Donegal were outstanding from the offset, and a goal from Amber Barrett midway through the first-half was a real turning point.
The Milford star was on hand to pounce when a long diagonal ball inside wasn’t dealt with by the Westmeath defence.
Barrett reacted quickest and expertly dispatched the opportunity which put Donegal in the ascendancy.
They added scores from Katy Herron, Geraldine McLaughlin and Karen Guthrie to go in six clear at half-time, on a score-line of 1-07 to 0-04.
Westmeath knew they needed a goal to get back into it, but they found Aoife McColgan in stunning form.
She made a stunning save at the end of the first-half, and followed it up with two more in the second-half.
Donegal continued to look classy on the ball, and they picked off Westmeath at ease at times by playing quick direct counter-attacking football.
At times Donegal really were a joy to watch, Yvonne McMonagle was a constant threat and she scored two brilliant goals late on in the second-half to seal a famous victory.
Donegal really were outstanding, and had a host of star performers all throughout the side.
They were thoroughly deserving winners and their victory ensures they will play Division One football next season.
Well done to all the management, players and staff for their incredible performance.
Well done ladies, enjoy the celebrations!
