FEATURES: A Donegal schoolteacher will launch her book, ‘The Little Things’ tonight in memory of a past pupil at the Mount Errigal Hotel tonight.
Mary McFadden, an English teacher at Loreto Secondary school will official launch her book tonight, as part of her on-going campaign to raise awareness on Mental health.
Mary has composed a short book of poetry, stories and artwork from the students here in Loreto.
The book has been titled “The Little Things” and is in memory of a past pupil who suffered a lengthy battle with depression.
This has inspired a great drive on the promotion of a positive mental health in their school and in the wider community especially among young people.
Mary told Donegal Daily, “I am working with Jigsaw Letterkenny on this project and we hope to raise funds and awareness for the services available at Jigsaw.
“Headstrong‘s Jigsaw programme is based on an extensive evidence base and has demonstrated “value for money” as an innovative early intervention prevention programme.
“A significant amount of research has revealed that the onset of mental health disorders peaks during adolescent and early adult years. In addition, studies have shown that young people who experience mental health difficulties are unlikely to look for help.
“Keeping this in mind, the main aim and theme of the book is the promotion of awareness and openness surrounding mental health, to assure young people there is help available and to encourage them to seek out the available services.”
In addition to the book, there will be several fundraising events to promote positive mental health. The book will be launched tonight, Friday the 6th of May in the Mt Errigal hotel here in Letterkenny.
The launch night will consist of performances from local musicians, information on mental health, testimonials from Jigsaw, guest speakers and a LipSync battle between staff and students. Hopefully the night will be very informative, entertaining and will really get people talking about health.
