GARDAÍ are hunting vandals who used graveyard headstones to smash windows in a national school before smearing excrement over the building.
In one of the most serious series of attacks on a primary school in Donegal in years, gardaí are hoping to identify those behind the incidents at Ayr Hill National School in Ramelton.
Vandals hurled kerb stones from nearby graves through the windows and spread excrement around the building.
The two teacher has under forty children on the rolls and a spokesperson said that Gardai have been investigating these two incidents and are appealing to the public for their assistance.
There is no obvious motive for these attacks apart from mindless vandalism according to community spokespersons who have expressed shock at these attacks.
Ayr Hill is a mixed school located in a quiet part of town on the Tank Road and does not attract much pedestrian traffic at night. The location has a security system and is well lit. No cause has yet been established for these attacks and the community is shocked at this turn of events in their midst.
The Church Street cemetery is close by and it was here that the vandals removed kerb stones from a number of graves to hurl through the school windows.
Local Cllr. Ian McGarvey has condemned the incidents saying such behaviour was an insult to the community.
He tells today’s Tirconaill Tribune that it was to be regretted that anyone should attack this small school and use kerb stones from the nearby cemetery to do so.
He has called for any suspicious movements in the area to be made known to the Gardai at Milford urgently.
The first attack was three weeks ago and as the Gardai continued their investigations, a second spate of vandalism took place over the weekend.
Meanwhile the school has been left to count the cost of repairing the damage from scarce resources and the community is asked to be extra vigilant in tracking down those who are carrying out these attacks.
The Gardai at Milford can be contacted on 07491 53060.
