FOR some, Saturday afternoons are all about the buzz of a shopping spree or going to a football match.
For others, it’s about coming together and making great music.
The Donegal Chamber Orchestra has been in rehearsal for a number of weeks preparing for its concert next month.
Every Saturday this dedicated group of musicians meet at the Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny, to prepare a captivating repertoire for audiences throughout the county.
Artistic director, Spanish cellist Víctor Yélamo, brings his passion and exuberance to the
ensemble and is looking forward to the concert at the picturesque Church of Ireland in Lettermacaward.
Among the new members of the Donegal Chamber Orchestra is world-renowned scientist and academic Emeritus Professor Vyvyan Howard who previously played cello with the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra.
The Donegal Chamber Orchestra features classical string players of all ages from across county Donegal and is dedicated to helping students and amateur musicians achieve the highest level of excellence in performance.
The Orchestra was founded in 2006 by Hungarian violinist Orsolya Szabó-Yélamo (Violin resource tutor with Donegal Music Education Partnership) and Víctor Yélamo.
The ensemble is set to play an uplifting repertoire, including popular classics, in the beautiful setting of Lettermacaward on Saturday, May 7th.
Favourite pieces in the concert programme include ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’, main theme from the 1986 film The Mission, composed by Ennio Morricone and the evocative ‘Lara’s Theme’, from Dr Zhivago, composed by Maurice Jarre.
The audience will also hear music by Boyce, Torelli, Warlock and Tchaikovsky.
A concert not to be missed.
Donegal Chamber Orchestra perform at Lettermacaward Church of Ireland, Saturday May 7th at 8pm. Admission €10.
