Malin 0-17 Naomh Columba 1-09
Malin continued with another victory in Division 2 over Naomh Columba in the longest club match journey in Ireland. The visitors started off the scoring with a Ryan Gillespe score but from then on it was all Malin as they raced into a five point lead. Brendan McLaughlin replied for Malin before the first of three Anthony Kelly frees. Stephen McLaughlin scored from the left before Kelly slotted over his second free that Dan McDaid had done well to win. Kelly hit another free from out left as his free taking skills keep going strong. Brendan McLaughlin hit a lovely score with his right foot after running through the middle working a one-two with Kelly and hitting it on the run. They should have been further ahead when Stephen McLaughlin raced through but Pauric O’Donnell stood tall to keep out his goalbound effort. Malin pointed the 45’ through Christopher McLaughlin and finished the half strong. Dan McDaid finished off a lovely move being fed by Brendan McLaughlin after Kieron McColgan had done well to dispossess the opposition and Danny McCarron managed the pick it up and set McLaughlin away. Another Kelly free along with a good effort from Darren McLarkey out wide opened up a 0-10 to 0-01 lead. Dan McDaid struck the crossbar on the stroke of half time after good work from flying Stephen McLaughlin again ran past defenders like they werent there before squaring to McDaid who lashed against the woodwork.
Naomh Columba were much improved after the break, Christopher Byrne and Paul Doherty traded points with Brendan McLaughlin’s close in score and an exceptional Christopher McLaughlin point, who managed to withstand two robust challenges at the same time, showing great strength bursting through and cutting in from the left and banging over with his right. Ryan Gillespe hit two good scores and a free for the Glencolmcille side to get back to six. Danny McCarron responded with a good effort from the left and then Brendan McLaughlin added two more, the first after a good turnover was won in the midfield and the second advancing from a poor kickout which he won himself. The Glen men were given a lifeline when a mistake by the Malin keeper passed straight to Philip McNern who showed no mercy to drive into the net to give his side a bit of momentum. They tagged on more points from Stephen Jones and two Gillespe free to get within a goal but Malin hit back with two points from Brendan McLaughlin after a quick free with Kelly and Christopher McLaughlin hit a final score from range to seal the points.
