BY DD TRAVEL EDITOR TIM HEDGLEY: Aer Lingus will help to keep the cold at bay this winter as it launches its short haul programme for Winter 2016/2017 boasting 400,000 seats to the sun – the airline’s largest ever as part of a winter schedule.
Lanzarote comes out on top with 100,000 seats available from Dublin, Cork and Shannon.
This 15% increase is a result of increased frequencies from Dublin of seven to eight flights per week combined with upgrades to a larger A321 aircraft at weekends. Cork will now operate four weekly services to Lanzarote, offering more than 6,000 extra seats.
Malaga remains a firm winter sun favourite for couples and families alike with over 80,000 seats available. From October 2016 through to March 2017 Aer Lingus will operate nine weekly services from Dublin and Cork will see a 25% increase in seats with four weekly services planned for winter.
Key highlights of the Aer Lingus Winter 2016/2017 schedule include:
Almost 50% more seats on Aer Lingus from Dublin to Faro with an increase from three to five weekly services
A daily service will operate from Dublin to Lisbon for the majority of the winter programme
More than 50% growth on the Dublin to Fuerteventura route with three weekly services launched for winter
Dublin to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria will increase from three to four flights per week (10% more seats) across November, the Christmas period, as well as February and March
20,000 seats to Tenerife as Aer Lingus increases the service from three to four times weekly during key periods across winter.
Aer Lingus Chief Commercial Officer, Keith Butler said: “The 2016 winter programme is firmly focused on sun as we have grown our shorthaul routes to the sun by 15%. While traditionally summer is the time of year when people jet off to warmer surroundings, winter is certainly picking up pace as many opt for a second boost of sunshine to see them through the often harsh Irish winter.
“This winter we have particularly invested in Lanzarote as this is a top choice for Irish holidaymakers, whether they be couples, young families or groups of friends alike. The Canary Islands and Malaga remain firm favourites for winter sun and we’ve boosted these routes with greater frequency to meet the strong demand.”
