A DONEGAL man has become an overnight sensation in the home of country music Nashville after getting a short gig on one of the States’ top radio shows.
Diarmaid McGee, who is 23, is visiting the city with his aunt.
The UCD graduate, who studied Marketing and Spanish before pursuing a career as a musician, performing at open mic nights, busking on Dublin’s streets and writing his own songs.
His first stroke of luck in Nashville came when he bumped into one of his idols, Garth Brooks….and got this picture.
Later he was at a courier company office sending instruments back home to Donegal when he began chatting to a woman there….who just happened to be a producer on the The Bobby Bones Show radio show based in Nashville.
Sensing the opportunity, Diarmaid asked the woman called Morgan if there was any chance he could come on the show.
“I asked her and she was smiling at me,” said Diarmaid
“So I asked again and she did agree in a way, saying to send her an email— so she gave me her details.
“I did it right then and there and that night she said she didn’t think that the scheduling of the show would work. Then around half an hour later she replied again saying, ‘If you can make 8AM in the studio, you can sit in and listen to a few segments, no problem.’ Morgan is a total lady.
“And the rest of the crew and Bobby are just the most amazing people— so much fun and beautiful madness goes on in that room.”
Once in the studio, Diarmaid impressed with a cover of Eric Church’s song Wrecking Ball, with more than 180,000 people watching the clip online so far.
That will be no surprise to those who know him – he was sensational at the Donegal Town Music Festival last summer.
Dad Sean says his son is “absolutely blown away” by the reaction. “He’s busking away in Dublin and this is a major major step.”
Who says it doesn’t pay to have the craic?
