Michael Murphy has said despite Donegal alarming loss of form of late there was plenty of positives to take out of Saturday’s defeat to Dublin at Croke Park.
Donegal captain and talisman Murphy saw red midway through the second-half, and his dismissal affected Rory Gallagher’s side badly in the closing stages as Dublin pulled away.
However, Murphy singled out Gaoth Dobhair player Kieran Gillespie for special praise.
The talented wing-half back made his full Donegal debut in the daunting cauldron of Croke Park, but Murphy said he was ‘absolutely awesome’.
Murphy admitted Donegal are in a bit of a hole at the minute and that they need to get out of it quickly.
Murphy told The Irish Star, “Look the league is very tough, one minute you’re riding a crest of a wave and building momentum.
“Our form has turned, and now we’re in a bit of a hole, but we have to pull ourselves out of it.
“We came to Croke Park on Saturday looking for a result, so we weren’t desperately disappointed when we didn’t get it.
“We were all looking forward to it all week, any time you go to Croke Park you have a pep in your step.
“But we just didn’t have it over the course of the 70, we hung in there, but we just couldn’t kick on.
Murphy did say there was a lot of positives from the game and said Donegal has a bright future.
“I thought Ryan and Eoin McHugh were fantastic, and Kieran Gillespie on his debut was absolutely awesome.
“That’s brilliant to have that coming up to the championship, Mark Anthony McGinley was a big plus in goals too, so there was plenty to take from it.”
Donegal face Monaghan this weekend, knowing a win could earn them a place in the semi-finals, while a defeat and depending on other results could see them relegated.
