IT’S one of Donegal’s most famous marching bands – with world championships to their name – but the Letterkenny Pipe Band has been forced to miss St Patrick’s Day for the first time in its history due to lack of players.
“Unfortunately we will not be taking part in any parades this year due to a lack of players,” said band founder Mervyn Elvin.
Formed in 2000 by Mervyn Elvin, the band has taught many young people of the area both bagpipes and drums.
Crowning glory for the band came in 2009 when the band were crowned World Champions in Grade 4a.
Unfortunately, since 2009, emigration, college, work and family commitments have resulted in a drop in numbers for the band.
Said Mervyn: “It will be the first year in the history of the band that we will not be taking part in any parades, having taken part in our local parade in Letterkenny every year since the band was formed.
“We hope you all have a good day wherever you are.”
