Donegal motorists are amongst the top drink-drivers in the country.
An analysis of all penalty points for 2016 shows that Donegal had the joint second-highest number of penalty points issued for drink driving.
A total fo 15 offences per 100,000 people in Donegal was for drink-driving, just behind the highest which was Co Cavan on 16 drink driving offences per 100,000 people
Gardai handed out penalty points to almost a quarter of a million drivers last year – and three out of every four offences were for speeding.
A huge 188,077 of the offences related to speeding – 75% of the total 249,599 offences recorded.
Kilkenny drivers top the speeding list, racking up a whopping 5,331 offences per 100,000.
Wexford is next at 4,701 per 100,000, followed by Kildare with a rate of 4,533.
Driving while using a mobile phone was the second biggest offence last year with points handed out to 26,216 licence holders.
