Gardaí are continuing to quiz a 39-year-old Donegal dissident terror suspect following the seizure of three assault rifles suspected to have been used in the murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel last month.
He was arrested outside Slane on Wednesday. The weapons were found in his car.
Gardaí have carried out follow-up searches but are refusing to give details. A Garda spokesman would only say: “A number of searches have taken place in east Donegal. We have no further information at this time.”
The Garda spokesman added: “The searches are continuing.”
However we understand a number of items have been recovered in the Donegal searches with forensic experts involved.
The Donegal man was held after armed gardaí from the Emergency Response Unit and the Special Detective Unit stopped a car near Slane.
The suspect is believed to be connected to dissident republicans in Derry styling themselves the New IRA – formerly the Real IRA who were behind the murders of 29 people in the Omagh bombing in which three Buncrana schoolboys died.
The operation and arrest was the result of a massive undercover garda operation involving detectives in Donegal and Dublin.
