The Basics of Growing a Beard for the First Time
- Don’t touch it
Growing a solid beard takes at least a month. While we want you looking your best at all times, it is highly recommended that you hold off any heavy-duty shaping or trimming for at least a month.
By doing this, your beard will be fuller and you will get an idea what kind of shape your beard lends itself to. Also, what may have been a light patch in the beginning could now be completely blended in with the rest of the beard.
- The dreaded itch
The beard may start to itch in the first few days or not until week three but, rest assured, it will happen. At this point, it is time to grow a pair and tolerate it as, I can assure you, it will pass.
The itch is due to the sharp edges of your stubble which is strong hair that curls back and pokes you in the skin. There are a few trade secrets to get through this, none better than Prorasso Beard Balm which moisturises and softens the hair.
Using a beard balm will make this phase a stroll in the park.
- The psychological
If you are new to the beard-growing process, you’ll find the most challenging part is being able to handle other people’s reactions. Going for a different look will, without doubt, get comments from others.
The first and most difficult challenge will be communicating with those who are closest to you. I’ve found that if you ask for support from them, you’ll usually find success.
Maybe try:
“Honey, I’ve decided to grow a beard and I know it’s going to be a little bit different. It’s something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but never had the confidence to do. I’m hoping to grow it for a few weeks and could really use your support.”
If they aren’t 100% supportive, then try:
“Darling, I’m (Age) years old and am looking to spend another 50 years with you. Please give me a few weeks of these next 50 years where I can try something that is very important to me.”
If that doesn’t work:
“I don’t know how I’m going to manage without you, but I’m starting tomorrow…”
- Look after it
When growing a beard, you will find the hair very strong and stubborn. Also, what most men don’t realise is that the skin underneath begins to get very dry.
A good quality beard oil will solve both of these issues. A very small amount massaged in daily will be all the care your skin and beard needs. With a simple comb in the right direction, it will be at its best.
- Shaping
Once you feel you have gone beyond the length you were aiming for, you can now trim it back into the shape you desire. Careful, this is where we lose most beards.
Trimming the beard into a perfect shape on your first attempt is a delicate task. If you feel confident go for it, if not, a trip to your barbers is a must (as long as you are sure they’re capable of delivering your request).
- Enjoy
After that, enjoy your new look. It may make you more handsome, rugged, distinguished, mature or carefree. Whatever it is, be happy with yourself and enjoy the fact that you tried something new and different.
I can assure you that the process will help you to become more open minded towards others, more patient and more confident.
