All proceeds go to Pieta House which is a prevention centre for self harm and suicide.
There are 110 venues around the country – but Arranmore is set to have the most spectacular setting.
“There were posters about another place hosting darkness into light on the island last year. It occurred to me why shouldn’t we have our own 5k? I made sure we were going to have one the following year (this year),” said organiser Denis O’Donnell.
“Now we have a strong committee and support from the community to go ahead and have a great event. Thankfully suicide hasn’t been a problem on the island. But mental health issues are common. That’s where it all can start if the right help isn’t sought.
“I think most people would know someone with a mental health problem. There has been a big stigma about mental health. But all that is changing due to Pieta House and the Darkness Into Light event. It’s a great way to get people talking and doing something positive for a worthy cause.”
Online registration for the event has started today. We will also be having registration on the island up to the event. People from the mainland who want to attend can register online.
Soon participants can register at both booking offices for the red and blue Arranmore Ferries. Ferries will be coming into the island on the morning in time for the 5k and returning back out afterwards.
Said Denis: “Weather can’t be guaranteed in this country But if the weather is good Arranmore could be the most beautiful scenic route anywhere!”
