On an extremely cold frosty day, with the north wind blowing at its most severe, the Alliance visited Dunfanaghy Golf Club for the penultimate outing of the 2015/16 season. With the course in excellent condition, it was a pleasure to see that, as with most clubs, the members there are pushing on with improvements to their environs.
As for the golf itself, local professional Seamus McMonagle showed a clean pair of heels to a very impressive crowd of scratch golfers. The first nine proved the easier as all those in contention were out in level par. This was fine until they turned into the wind and the vagaries of it showed up in the number of balls coming up short of the green and it also accounted for a number of balls going out of bounds. The only player finishing in the prizes and having not gone out in level par was Brian McElhinney, who had a nightmare start as he went four over par after seven holes but got his place on the podium by playing the last eleven holes in one under par.
In the Nett section, the winner was Eugene Corry, showing a welcome return to form, when he amassed 20pts on each nine. Eugene did slow down at the end of the outward nine when he only secured two points on the last two holes but his birdie at the 10th got things back on track for him and he ended up with another 20pts for a total of 40pts and a 2pt winning margin. Runner-up Lee O’Connor had 18pts on the first nine and 20pts on the back to total 38pts.
This was the last counting competition in Golfer of the Year and congratulations to Michael McGeady who won the Gross section with 55, having gone one better from being runner-up last year. In second place this year was Brian McElnhinney on 52 with Paul McGuigan, fresh from his ‘operation transformation’ third on 33.
The Nett section was won convincingly by Clive Davison who had been the long time leader since August despite being pushedinto third position last month. But Clive deservedly came through again on this, the last day, with 36 followed by Eddie McHugh on 29 and Odran McGettigan, the incoming Captain for 2016 /17, in third place .
