Three major road projects have been granted funding by the National Road Authority.
The projects in Dunfanaghy, Creeslough and Gortahork will mean a spend of more than €1 million.
Glenties Electoral Area Councillor Seamus O Domhnaill has received confirmation of the projects in the Glenties Municipal District during 2016.
The three projects which have received the green light and will proceed in 2016 are;
· The re-surfacing of Dunfanaghy Main Street from Moores garage towards the Ozanam Centre, circa €550,000
· Strengthening and safety works at the Log Cabin at Drimnaraw, Creeslough, circa €350,000
· Continuation of the resurfacing at Fanaboy towards Dunlewey Junction N56 re structuring and surfacing scheme, circa €300,000
In welcoming the announcement Cllr. O Domhnaill said “I am happy to have been in a position to secure funding for these projects through representations
which I have been making to the NRA in regards to these works which are essential to the continued upgrade of the N56, this road serves as the major conduit from the North West of the County towards Letterkenny and beyond.
“The upgrading of the Dunfanaghy main street surface is essential in so far as the current surface is in a state of disrepair with large cracks and crevasses appearing on the main street and this funding allows for these problems to be addressed this year and will involve a full Tarmacadam resurfacing from Moores Shop up Main street towards the Ozanam centre”.
He added the works at the Log Cabin in Creeslough will address a dangerous surface which has been causing accidents at the Log Cabin at Drimnaraw, Creeslough.
“This has been an issue of great public concern in recent months and I am delighted to have received confirmation that the re-structuring and re-alignment of this project will proceed once a design is in place. Realistically we are looking at the end of 2016 before ay actual construction work will commence but the commitment from the NRA advising that the funding is in place for this project is a major positive step forward.”
The third tranche of funding will see the continuation of a resurfacing scheme heading from Fanaboy towards the Dunlewey junction which is in serious need of upgrading given the bad standard of surface which currently exists along this stretch of road.
These projects will serve to offer two things for motorists in this region, namely, increase the safety of these routes for users and decrease travel times for users of these roads.
O Domhnaill is pleased with progress which he has been in a position to make with the upgrade of the upgrade of the N56.
He added “I will continue to press upon the NRA the need for continued funding to ensure that the N56 is upgraded to an acceptable standard, this road is vital to West and South Donegal and it is essential that all public representatives keep this road ad it’s continued upgrade towards the top of their agenda.
