RAPHOE NOTES:
Raphoe Family Resource Centre:
Sponsored Walk
Tony Mc Daid, Project Coordinator of the Family Resource Centre in Raphoe is embarking on a 388km sponsored walk around the 9 Family Resource Centres in Donegal from 4th-15th May. The aim of the walk is to raise money to support the work of the Family Resource Centres while at the same time highlighting the valuable work of the FRCs in supporting children, young people, families and the community.
The National Family Resource Centre Programme was subject to 5% cuts in funding each year during the period 2012-2014 while budgets for 2015 and 2016 remained at 2014 levels. These cuts proved difficult to manage and put increased pressure on Family Resource Centres to sustain their supports and services at pre-cut levels compelling them to initiate local fundraising activities at a time when families and communities were experiencing and continue to experience their own particular financial hardships.
The local community in Raphoe would be aware that the Family Resource Centre relocated premises towards the end of 2015 in an attempt to reduce outgoings. We have also organised small fundraising events and we would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all those who have supported our fundraising efforts thus far.
The other Family Resource Centres in Donegal are: The Forge in Pettigo; Donegal FRC in Donegal Town; Downstrands in Narin/Portnoo; Dunfanaghy; Mevagh in Downings; Cara House in Letterkenny; St.Johnston & Carrigans and Moville.
If you are an individual, a family, a community organisation or a business and would like to sponsor Tony please contact the Family Resource Centre on 074-9145796 or 087-3641503.
Drop-in Tuesdays
Drop-in Tuesdays will commence in the Family Resource Centre in the Volt House on Tuesday 5th April 2016 from 10.30-11.30am. Seniors Alert Scheme
The objective of the Seniors Alert Scheme is to encourage community support for vulnerable older people in our communities through the provision of personal monitored alarms to enable older persons of limited means to continue to live securely in their homes with confidence, independence and peace of mind.
Funding is available under the scheme towards the purchase of equipment by a registered organisation i.e. personal alarm and/or pendant. The associated monitoring and service charges must be paid by the participant.
A person will be eligible if he or she is:
· Aged 65 years or older; and
· Of limited means or resources; and
· Living alone, living with another person who meets the eligibility criteria; and
· Resides within geographical area of the relevant registered organisation; and
· Able to benefit from the equipment supplied; and
· Are prepared to maintain contact with the registered organisation.
Raphoe Family Resource Centre has now taken over the administration of the Scheme. Therefore, if you or anyone you know are eligible for the scheme please do not hesitate to contact Laura at Raphoe Family Resource Centre on (074)9145796 or 0873641503 or alternatively call into our office located on the second floor of The Volt House, Raphoe.
Raphoe Boxing Club
The boxers and officials at the Raphoe Boxing Club would like to extend a sincere thanks to everyone at Raphoe Road Runners for their generous donation from their very successful New Year’s Day 5K. It is greatly appreciated by all at the Boxing Club.
Congratulations to local girl Aoife McGinley who represented the Clanree Hotel in this year’s Donegal Rose Selection. Well done from all at the boxing club.
On Saturday last Raphoe boxers Liam Crawford and Tom Doherty were part of the Co. Donegal team that travelled to Ennis in Co. Clare to box at a major inter-county tournament in the Ennis Community Centre. Liam Crawford turned in a veteran’s display of ringcraft when he outpointed Clare’s Lee Lyons. Tom Doherty gave a good display of guts and courage only to lose out to Adam Grant. The team result was Donegal 6 bouts, Co. Clare 6 bouts.
On Sunday next Liam Crawford and Liam McMonagle will compete in the N.W. Zones Championships in Clonmany C.C. The winners here will go on to the Ulster Finals on Sunday 13th March in Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh.
