Newly elected Donegal TD Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher is seeking the Fianna Fáil nomination for the Ceann Comhairle position.
RTE political correspondent Martina Fitzgerald broke the news earlier this evening via Twitter.
She tweeted, @Pat_theCope to seek the @fiannafailparty nomination for Ceann Comhairle #rtenews #ge16
Gallagher has received positive feedback on Twitter with Ken McFadden tweeting, @MartinaFitzg @Pat_theCope @fiannafailparty there will be no messing in the Dail if the cope is in the chair!
Gallagher will face competition from Michael Moynihan for the Ceann Comhairle position.
If Gallagher is successful, he will be automatically elected in the election which means only four seats will be up for grabs in Donegal.
Gallagher proved his unrelenting popularity among the Donegal electorate by gaining re-election to the Dáil on Sunday evening.
The former MEP, finished third in the poll – behind sitting TD’s Charlie McConalogue and Pearse Doherty.
Political commentators commented that Gallagher ran a flawless campaign.
