Irish Water says there is no threat to the public after confirming that the contamination incident that occurred at the intake to the Ballyshannon Water Treatment Plant on Wednesday last was as a result of agricultural activity involving slurry.
“We wish to reassure our customers that the contamination was immediately isolated. At no point did contaminated water enter the water supply network and at no point was there any risk posed to public health,” said an Irish Water spokeswoman.
“Production of water from the Ballyshannon Treatment Plant has been stopped temporarily and Irish Water, in partnership with Donegal CoCo, was able to provide an alternative water supply as a matter of priority.
“The provision of an alternative water supply has caused some water pressure issues in Coolcholly, Corker, Abbeylands, Creevy, Rossnowlagh Lower, Ballyshannon, Rossnowlagh, Cluain Barron, Upper Erne Dale Heights and surrounding areas in Co. Donegal as rezoning takes place.
“There were two incidents of water outages last Thursday, however, these were in relation to operational issues and have now been resolved.
“In the meantime, clean-up operations including additional testing and sampling is on-going at the Ballyshannon Water Treatment Plant and Irish Water is working closely with DCC, the EPA and the HSE to ensure the Plant is returned to full operations at the earliest possible opportunity, which is estimated to be mid-March.”
