Fine Gael TD Joe McHugh is confident he will ‘get over the line’ and credited an effective and comprehensive campaign for his success.
Speaking to Donegal Daily at the count centre at the Aura Leisure Centre earlier this afternoon McHugh said “We ran a very effective and comprehensive campaign, and geographically the size of Donegal it was a huge challenge.
“But I’m just delighted to get down here and meet the workers here this afternoon.
“My personal target was always to get over 8,000 votes, we’ve achieved that on the basis of these tallies.
“Obviously we’re going to have to wait for transfers before we can get over the line, but I’m confident we will get over the line.”
He also acknowledged the hard work of his team in recent weeks.
“I just want to acknowledge my team who worked so hard for me, and paramount to that to the voters who came out and voted for me.
“We’ve had a very difficult time in Government, we were an unpopular Government because of the decisions we had to make.
“People have said there is still need for my voice in there, I’m not over the line yet, but with that endorsement of over 8,000 votes I’m confident, I’ll get over the line.
“I’m confident but look anything can happen, in this election, nobody predicted this, the opinion polls weren’t good, nobody predicted this.
“So I’m not saying we’re over the line yet, but I’m very, very confident.”
