A nurse with strong Donegal connections who was infected with Ebola in Sierra Leone has been hospitalised for the third time.
Health worker Pauline Cafferkey — a cousin of football icon Packie Bonner — was rushed to hospital in Glasgow after showing signs the fatal virus had returned.
A source confirmed the 39-year-old was undergoing treatment at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but added medics hadn’t decided whether to send her back to the London facility where she was kept in isolation twice before.
A source told the Irish Sun: “Pauline has been admitted to hospital again following routine tests. It’s unclear at the minute if she will have to attend the Royal Free Hospital but plans have been put in place if required.
“She is unwell and showing signs the virus may have returned. Further tests have been carried out and Pauline is being treated as if she has Ebola again.”
Pauline, of Cambuslang, near Glasgow, had initially recovered after contracting the virus while working with victims of the outbreak in Sierra Leone, West Africa, in late 2014.
But in October last year she suffered a relapse when she contracted a strain of meningitis as a result of the virus. Weeks later docs again gave her a clean bill of health.
