Fine Gael Minister Joe McHugh, has said that €723,750 has been allocated to Donegal County Council for the repair and development of harbours and slipways in 2016.
The funding is part of a €4.5 million national funding package announced by Minister for Agriculture and the Marine, Simon Coveney, to carry out repair works following recent storms and severe weather.
“Unfortunately the severe weather and storms that we experienced this winter have caused damage to piers, harbours and slipways around Donegal,” McHugh told Donegal Daily last night.
“I have been working closely with Minister Coveney to secure funding for the repair and future protection of harbours and I am delighted with the announcement that Donegal County Council is to receive over half a million in funding for this purpose.
“Here in Donegal we depend so much on our piers and harbours for fisheries, marine leisure and tourism, so they are crucial to the protection of local jobs. Our harbours, piers and slipways also serve as vital infrastructure for access to local people, and so it is extremely important that we repair them when damaged and also weather proof them against future damage.
“This funding allocation is part of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marines’ 2016 Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme. The Department co-funds up to 75% the total cost of approved projects with the Local Authority providing the balance.
“It is thanks to our recovering economy that we can make these kinds of investments in our piers and harbours. They are so crucial to our fisheries, tourism and marine leisure sectors and they are of fundamental importance in terms access for local people.
“Fine Gael has a long term economic plan designed to keep the recovery going which will ensure we can continue to make these kinds of investments. The plan has three steps: more and better jobs, making work pay more than welfare, and investment in better public services, which will only be possible as a result of the increased revenue generated by creating more jobs. This plan will ensure that more people feel the benefits of a recovering economy in their own lives.”
