ELECTION CANDIDATE Tim Jackson has warned that political parties are once again using auction politics to regain power but ignoring the dangerous economic realities Ireland is facing.
According to Jackson the upturn in the Irish economy is not a real recovery, and cannot be expected to last much longer.
“Ireland’s recent economic performance is down to the price of oil, a
devalued Euro, and low interest rates globally,” said the Twin Towns man.
“None of this has anything to do with Fine Gael, yet they are claiming credit for an
upturn in the economy. If you read the economists who predicted the
2008 crash, they are once again telling us that the world is on the
brink of a major collapse, and the vast majority of our politicians
are ignoring this warning, instead making election promises and
budgets that jeopardise the country’s future.
“A true recovery is one that breaks the boom-bust cycle and includes
the whole of society, giving everyone a better standard of life. The
Fine Gael ‘recovery’ is lacking in both of these departments.
“It’s crucial that voters realise our politicians are playing Russian
Roulette with the future of Ireland, by ignoring the critical need to
reduce our sovereign debt which would insulate us somewhat against
economic shocks. I am not going to let politicians make election
promises about tax breaks and spending increases without reminding
them that our economic health as a nation depends on the global
economy, and the global economy is set for a very harsh recession if
leading economists are to be believed.”
Jackson concluded by saying, “It’s time for voters to break with their
habits of loyalty to political parties. It’s clear that the parties
are only interested in auction politics and clinging to power.
Instead, we need leaders who will make prudent decisions that will
stabilise our economy and protect the vulnerable.”
