He was speaking at today’s national demonstration in Dublin organised by the Right2Change movement, with an estimated 50,000 people on the streets.
Deputy Doherty said: “Right2change offers the people a real progressive alternative to the failed austerity policies which we’ve witnessed from Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Labour Party.
“There are over 100 General Election candidates who have signed up to the Right2Change principles of a right to water, a right to housing and a right to decent employment.
“Fifty thousand people have taken to the streets of Dublin today in a show of unity to take part in today’s demonstration which proves that, despite what the Government may want us to believe, the Irish people have not backed down – we haven’t gone away.
“They are sending a clear message to Enda Kenny, Joan Burton and to Michael Martin that their austerity agendas were not the will of the people, and for the vast majority of ordinary citizens there is no recovery.
“Sinn Féin believes that there is a better way to govern our society and to build a fair recovery and a better Ireland for our citizens.
“Next Friday, the people have a choice to make over who they want to lead the next Government and be in power for the next five years.
“They will be given the chance to vote for a government offering a real alternative or for one offering more of the same.
“I am calling on the people to seize this opportunity for change and on Friday 26thFebruary to get out and use their vote to elect a progressive Government of the Left who will put the needs and interests of citizens first.”
