Sinn Féin TD, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, has said that bursts on the main supply pipe from the Eddie Fullerton Dam have become a common occurrence which affect thousands of people in Fahan, Burnfoot, Bridgend, Burt, Newtowncunningham, Manorcunningham, Killea, Carrigans and St Johnson.
Deputy Mac Lochlainn said that the money which is wasted on the failed entity of Irish Water should be used to provide a decent water supply service to local communities.
Deputy Mac Lochlainn said: “Thousands of homes in South Inishowen have again been without water for a prolonged period of time. While I commend the crews who have worked to repair the burst, it must be acknowledged that this problem is happening far too often.
“It is unacceptable that our communities meet this problem so regularly. Elderly people, those with illnesses and parents getting their children ready for school in the morning should not have to deal with frequent water outages.
“This frustration is further compounded by text messages and bills which have been arriving from Irish Water. In fact, it highlights the need to scrap Irish Water.
“Sinn Féin has put forward costed proposals to abolish Irish Water and Water Charges. We have achievable plans to invest in our water supply and to upgrade projects such as the Eddie Fullerton Dam supply network.
“The main pipe from the dam needs to be upgraded as a matter of priority. It is a totally unacceptable situation.”
