FEATURES: Letterkenny and district Pipe Band is a cross community band based in Conwal Parish church hall, Letterkenny – and they’re looking for new members to join!
Formed in 2000 by Mervyn Elvin, the band has taught many young people of the area both Bagpipes and drums.
Crowning glory for the band came in 2009 when the band were crowned World Champions in Grade 4a.
Unfortunately, since 2009, emigration, college, work and family commitments have resulted in a drop in numbers for the band.
In 2014 Mervyn Elvin handed over the role of Pipe Major to Lee Hegarty but still remains a valued member and tutor.
Having gone back to basics they are now inviting new people to join the band whether as beginners or looking to play in 2016 Grade 4b competition.
As well as learning to read music, play an instrument and being part of a young enthusiastic team there have been proven health benefits in playing the bagpipes with lung capacity greater than that of a long distant runner.
Uniforms, equipment and tuition are all supplied free of charge with the only charge being €10 towards insurance.
Band practice is in Conwal Parish Hall, Letterkenny every Monday 7.30pm to 10pm and Friday 8pm to 10pm.
