Cllr Frank Mc Brearty says he is to contact County Manager Seamus Neely amidst claims that council staff have discussed strike action over the threat of 400 jobs being lost at Irish Water.
The Raphoe county councillor said the threat of jobs losses could extend to some council staff who had been sub-contracted to Irish Water.
Cllr Mc Brearty cannot confirm if this is true or false and is demanding confirmation on the matter.
The council has a 12 year contract with Irish Water, but they are trying to reduce their costs according to Cllr Mc Brearty.
Cllr Mc Brearty said the council and the Union must be clear on what is happening in the Council.
“I think the people of Donegal and in particular the staff of the County Council should be made aware of how many jobs could be lost. These jobs are not only important to the local economy but more so to each individual staff member and their families” says Cllr Mc Brearty.
According to Cllr Mc Brearty the members of the council told him that staff were fully prepared to go on strike with placards at the ready until the union intervened.
Cllr Mc Brearty said he is seeking to clarify from the council and the Union if this is true or false.
He asked “Has there been a serious problem of an ongoing threat of job losses of staff who work for Donegal County Council and are subcontracted by Irish Water? The public deserve transparency from their County Council and I will stand up for them “
