FIANNA FÁIL leader Micheal Martin is under fire after his party workers erected posters inside a ‘no election’ zone in Glenties.
The town’s community development group had asked yesterday for all political parties NOT to erect general election posters inside the 50km/hr zone in the town.
However last night general posters featuring party leader Micheal Martin – not candidates Pat the Cope Gallagher and Charlie McConalogue – were erected on the Narin Road inside the town limits.
Community Development Group secretary Richard Quigley says calls were made to Fianna Fail last night to remove the posters.
The ‘ban’ can’t be enforced. Erecting posters is legal from the moment Taoiseach Enda Kenny called the general election yesterday for February 26.
The group wrote to all candidates asking them to respect the wishes of the town.
“Glenties has a proud tradition as a tidy town and each year countless hours of hard work and endeavour, not to mention a lot of money, goes into keeping the town looking in the best possible condition all year round,” he said.
“We as a committee feel that the erecting of election posters is an unsightly practice particularly in a town such as Glenties with its ornate street fixings and floral displays. In previous elections we have regrettably noticed that posters have not been taken down within the allotted time and some left to fall down and lie in ditches whilst the eternal problem of discarded cable ties meant lots of sweeping for the towns hard working volunteers.”
He added: “We feel that this is a reasonable request given the hard work that goes into keeping Glenties looking as wonderful as it does all through the year.”
