It’s a first for Irish politics – but the date for the General Election 2016 has been announced via social media outlet Twitter!
Taoiseach Enda Kenny took to his Twitter feed to announce to the country that he will be seeking a dissolution of Dáil Éireann today with the election to be held on February 26th.
Kenny tweeted, “I am seeking a dissolution of Dáil Éireann today with the election to be held on February 26th.
In a short video he posted alongside the tweet Kenny asked the electorate to re-elect Fine Gael – in order to keep the recovery going.
Kenny said, “Five years on we still have many challenges ahead of us, and the job is not done – but we’ve made real progress.
“Our public finances are back on track, our economy is growing again, faster than any other country in the EU.
“135,000 more people are back at work, there is no more bailout, no more troika and no more dead banks.
“Ireland is clearly moving in the right direction, it’s a clear choice to continue on the path of recovery with Fine Gael or putting your hard earned progress at risk by handing power over to those who wrecked the country in the past – and those who would so again in the future.”
