A GAA correspondent has said he feels Ryan McHugh is the best player in the country without an All-Star.
McHugh was in stunning form in Newry on Saturday night, as a rampant Donegal side annihilated Down.
McHugh scored two fantastic goals, and in general play was a constant menace throughout.
His piercing runs through the heart of the Down defence was a recurring feature all night – and Down couldn’t contain the Kilcar star.
GAA reporter for The Irish Daily Star, Karl O’Kane heaped praise on McHugh and rued the fact he didn’t take a punt on McHugh for first goalscorer at 18-1.
O’Kane wrote, “We looked long and hard at the 18/1 on Ryan for first goalscorer against Down, but left it alone.
“McHugh junior is the best player in the country without an All-Star, and he has few peers in terms of his incisions into games, scoring two goals against Down at the weekend on searing overlaps.
“Ryan’s brother Mark may not be on the Donegal squad right now, but his cousin Eoin, has a serious burst of pace and looks a real prospect.
“Donegal look very fit and focused, and are on the right side of the Ulster draw and All-Ireland draw.
“With Leo McLoone’s power and Anthony Thompson’s engine back full-time – they’ll be real Sam Maguire contenders this summer.”
