An Offshore Protection Vessel that helped rescue over 1,000 stricken refugees from the Mediterranean Sea last Autumn – is currently sheltering from ferocious Storm Henry off the Donegal coast.
The patrol vessel of the Irish Naval Service saved thousands of refugees who were forced to flee war-torn Syria in search of a better way of life in Europe.
Unfortunately, as was well-documented, countless vessels carrying these refugees overturned and hundreds drowned.
The Irish Navy sent the LÉ Samuel Beckett to aid in rescue efforts, and in doing so saved thousands from a similar fate.
In the picture above, which was sent into us at Donegal Daily by John Carnie shows the vessel anchored in Lough Swilly – as she shelters from Storm Henry.
It also shows local crabbing vessel The Peader Elaine passing LÉ Samuel Beckett – on her way back out to their fishing grounds this afternoon.
LÉ Samuel Beckett is an offshore patrol vessel of the Irish Naval Service.
The ship was launched in November 2013 and commissioned in May 2014.
She is named after Irish playwright and author Samuel Beckett.
