WORKERS at a call centre in Ballyshannon who answer 999 emergency calls are threatening strike action over wages and working conditions.
They are expected to ballot on industrial action in the next week along with colleagues at two other centres in the State.
The staff want a 50 cent per hour pay rise – they currently earn €11-an-hour from private company which runs the service privately on behalf of the State.
The Communications Workers’ Union chief Steve Fitzpatrick said: “The 999 workers are delivering a vital public emergency service and they play an essential role in the first responder services to protect life.
“It is unacceptable that they are paid low wages and are forced to endure a petty and vindictive management regime that flouts common decency and the respect that workers are entitled to in the workplace.
“Our members have now exhausted every avenue available to them to avoid balloting for industrial action but, by continuously ignoring their concerns, Conduit and BT Ireland left them with no other choice.”
