A man who was travelling at a speed almost double the legal limit has been disqualified from driving from three months.
Sean McBride, 30, with an address at 23 Glenowen Park, Derry, pleaded guilty to the charge at Letterkenny District Court this morning.
Garda Patrick Gerraghty told the court, “On the 18th of April, 2015 – I was operating a speed detection checkpoint at Trimeragh, Letterkenny.
“I detected a vehicle doing 170km/hr in a 100km/hr zone and subsequently pulled the vehicle over.
“I showed the occupant of the vehicle the speed he was travelling at – and asked him for his name, address and driver’s license.
Judge James Faughnan asked Garda Gerraghty, “Did he offer any excuse as to why he was travelling at such an excessive speed? It’s almost double the limit allowed in that zone.”
Garda Gerraghty responded by saying, “No excuses were given Judge.”
Judge James Faughnan fined the defendant €350 and gave him five months to pay the fine – and he also disqualified Mr McBride from driving for three months.
