SINN FÉIN President Gerry Adams has apologised to Donegal TD and government minister Joe McHugh over claims made by the Louth TD in the Dáil.
Mr Adams had repeated a claim in a national newspaper which said Minister McHugh had made an appointment without going through the proper channels.
The republican leader accused the Donegal political of cronyism, claiming he had appointed Mayo man Fintan Gorman as chair of Inland Fisheries Ireland.
However it wasn’t an outside appointment. Mr Gorman was already on the board of the organisation and the chairmanship appointment was part of normal procedure.
“I told Mr Adams he was wrong in what he said in the Dáil and to be fair to him, once he realised his mistake he called me and apologised,” said Minister McHugh.
“I told him he also needed to correct the record in the Dáil and he did return to the chamber later and he corrected the record and issued an apology.
“I was delighted to hear Mr Adams issue his apology in Irish because I am all for encouraging more use of our native tongue.”
