A CO Donegal family is mourning the loss of Molly Madden, who was Ireland’s oldest citizen and the oldest person in the world.
Molly passed away on Saturday aged 109.
Her son Noel is the well-known publican who owns Madden’s Bridge Bar in Bundoran.
The premises are closed for a couple of days as a mark of respect.
“The Madden Family is deeply saddened to inform you that Noels mother, Molly Madden (109yrs), passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning in Moyridge Nursing Home, Ballina, Co Mayo,” said the family.
“The bar will be closed from 8pm Sunday 17th, reopening Tuesday 19th January.”
Molly Madden was born in Caherlistrane, Co Galway, in December 1906 before moving to Ballycastle in Co Mayo with her family when she was aged seven.
She was a former priest’s housekeeper and she had been married to her husband Pat for 65 years before he passed away.
She was the mother of four children – three sons and a daughter; grandmother to 20 and great-grandmother to 31 children.
Molly lived independently at her home in Ballycastle until the age of 99, when she suffered a fall and moved to the Moy Ridge nursing home in Ballina.
She will be laid to rest tomorrow.
