Donegal have exited the Dr McKenna Cup competition following a second successive defeat in a matter of days to St Mary’s and Fermanagh respectively.
Donegal travelled to Brewster Park tonight, hopeful of booking a semi-final spot but they came unstuck against a Fermanagh side who came into clash having won their opening two group games.
Donegal were stunned on Sunday when St Mary’s defeated them by four points at O’Donnell Park.
This evening, Gallagher gave first starts of the season to Michael Murphy and Neil McGee but not even their presence could inspire Donegal to victory.
Donegal manager Rory Gallagher was returning to his native county Fermanagh and would’ve been confident of a win – but Sean Quigley was in brilliant form for the hosts and his place kicking was the difference between the sides.
Just like Sunday, Odhran MacNiallais was again a bright light for Gallagher’s men and helped himself to four points – two of which came from frees.
In a low-scoring game played in difficult conditions Fermanagh ran out comfortable winners in the end up and had four points to spare.
Donegal will now start building and will no doubt step-up their intensity levels in training ahead of their National League opener with Down.
Final score: Fermanagh 0-12 Donegal 0-08
