SINN FÉIN have described as ‘fantasy’ claims Donegal politician Pat Doherty is set to replace Gerry Adams as party president.
Weekend reports said the former party vice-president from Carrigart was ready to become leader if Adams stands down before the general election.
The reports said Doherty and Mary Lou MacDonald were favourites to take the top republican job.
Glasgow-born Doherty is MP for West Tyrone and a key republican strategist for 35 years.
Knocking down any suggestion that Deputy Adams would stand down, a Sinn Féin spokesman said: “Gerry Adams will be contesting the next election as leader of Sinn Fein to represent the people of Louth and to lead a progressive government to deliver a fair recovery, end the chaos in health and housing and promote Irish unity.”
