GARDAI have issued an urgent warning to motorists to SLOW DOWN as many roads this afternoon are in a treacherous condition.
Frequent wintry showers of sleet, hail and snow have affected many parts of the north and west of the county.
It does not appear at this stage that any road have been gritted.
A number of sporting events have been cancelled due to poor road conditions.
A traditional friendly soccer match between Ballybofey Utd and Tullyvinney Rovers was called off.
“Motorists should expect the unexpected,” said a Garda Traffic Corps spokesman.
“Drivers may find the road they are on in good condition but conditions change very quickly and we would urge people to drive with extreme caution, especially later when temperatures will drop and cause further freezing on the roads.”
A number of Garda patrols will be deployed today and tonight, he said.
Met Eireann has warned it will get very cold tonight.
Early tonight, showers will become isolated and confined to northern coasts. It will turn much colder, with frost and ice developing widely. Another hazard will be fog which will become dense in many places by dawn. Lowest temperatures 0 to -4 degrees Celsius.
