A big-hearted community has come together to finish a job which claimed the lives of two of its most-popular residents.
Life-long friends Kevin Woods and Seamus Hegarty, both, 52 week killed last week after a tractor tyre blew up in their faces.
The two farmers were in the middle of working on a field of potatoes when the tragedy happened at Killygordon on Friday, November 21st.
Both men were killed instantly during the accident which sent shockwaves across the county.
Now family, friends and neighbours of the men have come together to finish the job the men started to honour them.
A team of more than a dozen men gathered at the fields at Crossroads in Killgordon where Mr Woods had taken land to grow the potatoes.
A family friend said “It’s what Kevin and Seamus would have wanted.
“They were not the kind of workers to do half a job and this is the community’s small way of paying tribute to them.
“They were the most modest, hard-working and honest men you could meet and they would be happy to know that the crop was harvested in their memory.”
A full investigation has been launched by the Health and Safety Authority into the circumstances surrounding the men’s deaths.
Local priest Fr Edward Kilpatrick revealed that both men had ben inseparable throughout their lives and had went to school together, worked together and ultimately had died together.
He said it was this which people had found it particularly difficult to come to terms with.
“They were both decent, honest and upstanding members of the community.
“The fact that they went to school together, worked together and then died together is what people are finding it most difficult to come to terms with in this entire tragedy.
“But we have a very good community here and that same community will help the Woods and Hegarty families to cope with their terrible loss,” he said.
