Senior Men
The senior men will have to do it all again after drawing with Naomh Ultan in the division 3 relegation/promotion play off in Bundoran on Saturday.
It was a tight first half with score at a premium. Captain Damien Brown was leading by example and taking the game to the Dunkineely lads.
He knocked over 4 points in the first thirty minutes and another from Calvin Bradley seen the Reds going in at the break 0-5 to 0-4 in front.
It was also a very tight second half that seen the lead change 3 times. Scores from Damien Brown, Gerard Melaugh and an inspirational score from Paul Byrne seen the lads keep their nose in front by a single point mid way through the second half. The Dunkineely lads upped the tempo and finished the game strongly and took the lead in injury time. With virtually the last kick of the game Damien struck an amazing point to level the match and bring it into extra time.
The Cross men were on fire and were soon 6 points up in extra time with points from Damien, Calvin, Denim Rowan and a goal from Eugene Brown.
But the Naomh Ultan lads were not laying down and clawed their way back into the game and with a minute on the clock were trailing by a goal.
The final twist was a cruel one for the Cross lads. A defensive error seen Naomh Ultan ending the game with a goal to bring them level and forcing a replay.
Final score Red Hughs 1-16 Naomh Ultan 1-16
Manager Stephen Friel said the lads can take some positives from the match and also can learn from it for the replay.
Replay fixed for Saturday the 29th of November at 2.30pm in Mc Cool Park
League game this Saturday V Buncrana at home. Time T.B.C.
Minor Boys
Minor lads were defeated in the semi final of the championship on Friday evening in Buncrana.
The lads got off to a slow start and were trailing by 1-2 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. The Buncrana lads were playing a sweeper and the Reds found it hard to break through a very tight defensive unit.
Wayward passes and and missed chances in the first half was the story for the Cross boys. The half time score was Red Hughs 0-3 Buncrana 1-5
The second half seen the Red Hughs boys put in a much better performance. The Reds were on top for long periods and were soon back in the game.
A great move from defence into attack ended with a cracking goal from Odhran Doherty to cut the deficit to 3 points. It was tit for tat over the next 10 minutes.
Unfortunately the Reds could not close the gap and the Buncrana lads finished strong with a couple of long range points from their county star John Campbell. The Final score was Red Hughs 1-6 Buncrana 1-11
It wasn’t to be on the night for the young lads but they can be content with winning the Northern division 2 League title and runners up in the All County Division 2 league.
This bunch of lads can be very proud of their achievements from under 12 right through to minor winning numerous competitions along the way.
They will be a massive boost for our senior squad in the coming years.
