EXCLUSIVE: An internal investigation has been launched at Letterkenny General Hospital into the alleged theft of medications.
Management has confirmed to Donegal Daily that the incident relates to one department at the hospital.
We understand that staff at the department have now been told that they may be interviewed by Gardai as part of that investigation.
The exact quantity of drugs missing as part of the alleged theft has not been disclosed.
An official statement issued on behalf of the hospital by Saolta University Health Care Group to Donegal Daily confirmed the investigation.
However, the statement says that Gardai are not involved and a Garda spokesman has confirmed that they have not been officially notified of the internal investigation.
“An internal investigation has been initiated by the management at Letterkenny General Hospital following an audit of medication stockholding in one department.
“Further action will be determined by the outcome of that investigation. The Gardaí are not involved.
“Letterkenny General Hospital is not in a position to comment further.”
Our sources have indicated that it is suspected that quantities of tablets have gone missing from the identified department since the beginning of this year.
The investigation is the latest to hit the hospital since torrential rainfall caused more than €40 million worth of damage to the building in the summer of 2013.
A report is also ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a surveillance camera in the maintenance area of the hospital in March this year.
A report on the matter was due to be made public in October but this has not happened yet.
