Senior : Red Hughs V Naomh Brid
The fight for division 3 survival got under way at home on Sunday with Naomh Brid the visitors to the Cross. The Reds know exactly what they must do from now on and they set about their task in a determined manner.
The Reds were 4 points to no score ahead after 15 minutes with Colm Melaugh looking sharp inside and causing the Ballintra men lots of problems. The Hughs lads were dealt a blow in losing Eugene Brown to injury mid way through the first half and this seemed to give the visitors a boost. In fact The Reds would not score again in the first half and the visitors hit 4 unanswered points to level it up at the break.
The second half started very much as the first half did with the Reds well on top and opening up a 3 point lead. Once again the Ballintra men upped the ante within in 10 minutes were 2 points up after a goal and 2 points to leave the score 0-7 to 1-6.
Points from Damien Brown and Calvin Bradley tied up the game once more before Gerard Melaugh fired the ball to the bottom corner of the net from the 20 metre line to put the Hughs a goal up with 10 minutes to go. The introduction of county start David Walsh gave the visitors a boost who scored once again to close the gap to 2 points. But the lads were in no mood to let this one slip and Damien scored the final point of the game from what looked like an impossible angle. It was an impressive display from the lads and exactly what manager Stephen Friel was looking for.
The final score was Red Hughs 1-10 Naomh Brid 1-7
Next game is likely to be this Sunday at home to Carndonagh. T.B.C.
