The Careers and Postgraduate Studies Fair at Letterkenny Institute of Technology will be held on Monday, 20 October from 12 noon to 3 pm in An Dánlann sports hall and admission is free.
Careers Officer at LYIT Catherine Lyster said this year is shaping up to be one of the biggest ever.
“We’re definitely seeing an uplift in the numbers of employers in general but particularly from the construction, engineering, renewable energy, food, medical and agriculture sectors. We’re delighted to have the highest number of exhibitors ever, representing many different industries.”
So who should attend? “ Anyone who wishes to find out about job opportunities and explore postgraduate study options but also those considering a career change or would like some advice on new directions,” suggests Catherine.
“A large number of national and local employers as well as, other colleges and voluntary organisations will be there. Well known companies like, Price Waterhouse, Eason’s, Lidl , Ernst & Young are coming along and Washington Ireland who are looking for interns for the US. It’s a wonderful chance to talk directly to potential employers, regardless whether you’ve recently graduated or not.”
A big component of the Careers Fair is the many free seminars and advice on securing employment or considering a career change.
According to Catherine, “We’ve listened to feedback and extended the seminars to include, topics like career choices in Engineering/Accountancy, teaching in the UK or presenting yourself on Linked In. We will also be running the popular CV clinic with a panel of 5 experts where people can bring their CVs on the day and get free one-to-one guidance. Of course, we’ll have the Jobs Wall with current jobs listed.” Over 50 local and national organisations will be present from the IT, Food, Business, Green Energy and Science sectors.
Some well- known companies taking part includes: Pramerica, Allstate Northern Ireland, United Health, Zeus and specialist recruitment agencies. Smaller businesses looking to recruit top quality staff for permanent, temporary and part-time opportunities such as, Sendmode mobile marketing in Letterkenny are exhibiting. For those thinking about setting up a business, economic development agencies will also be there to answer questions.
A number of representatives from prominent universities and colleges throughout Ireland will be attending which offer advice on their range of postgraduate study options. In addition to full-time study, many courses can now be completed on a part-time or distance learning basis. Universities taking part include Queens, University of Ulster, Open University, many other universities from the UK and Ireland.
Professional associations who are exhibiting include Engineers Ireland, the Accountancy bodies in Ireland, Donegal Childcare and Nursing Careers, as well as voluntary organisations such as The Donegal Volunteer Centre. Voluntary work is a useful way for job seekers to develop valuable skills.
The free seminars running in the Clubs and Societies Room, An Danlann on offer are: Careers in Teaching find out the latest on applying to postgrad courses, Careers in Engineering, Careers in Accountancy (Lecture Hall CoLab); Using Linked In for your job search 12 – 12.45 pm: How to write a winning CV 1 – 1.45pm: Dress to Impress for your Career 2 – 3.15pm: An Overview of the Washington Irish Programme – 3.30 – 4.15pm.
