A Donegal county councillor has accused Sinn Fein TD Pearse Doherty of selling out the people of Donegal by agreeing to pay the water tax.
The Donegal south-west politician said he will be paying the water charge because he did not want to end up in a situation where he would have to pay Irish Water more cash.
But Independent councillor Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig has accused Deputy Doherty of abandoning the working class and trying to appeal to middle class voters.
“It is disappointing for Sinn Fein voters who simply cannot afford the water charges that Pearse Doherty will not stand in solidarity with them.
“These working class people cannot simply do not have a choice – they can barely pay their mortgages or put food on the table, let alone pay this new charge.
“Yet Pearse Doherty can’t find it in his heart to stand with the very poor of his constituency and he is now failing the very people who voted him in,” fumed Cllr MacGiolla Easbuig.
He accused Deputy Doherty of trying to “ride two horses” as he looked to the future and the hope of getting into Government.
“This is them looking (Sinn Fein) looking towards the middle classes to get the into power.
“They are giving mixed messages so these people can trust them. They are trying to be all things to all people.
“Eventually by riding two horses they will fall straight on their arse,” he claimed.
